How a Nuru Massage Session Works

A Nuru session is done on a waterproof mat rather than a standard massage table. The mat is laid on the floor or over a low platform, with towels around the edges. Before anything starts, you shower. Skin needs to be clean and warm, because the gel grips residue and cools quickly on cold skin. Many practitioners keep the room heated and warm the gel in a bath of hot water, since the sensation of cool gel on the back is unpleasant.

The gel itself is thick, clear and near odourless, usually seaweed-based, and much more viscous than oil. It is poured in a line along the spine and shoulders and spread with the forearms, then thinned with warm water as needed. The therapist works body-to-body: forearms, chest, torso and legs sliding over your back in long continuous passes, with almost no lifting of contact. Pressure comes from body weight rather than thumbs, so it feels broad and even rather than pointed.

The sequence usually runs back first, from shoulders down to calves, then a turn to the front, with the mat topped up with gel between stages. A standard booking runs 60 to 90 minutes, including shower time at both ends. Your job is simple: lie still, breathe slowly, and say if you are too warm or too cold. A second shower afterwards removes the gel completely.

Nuru needs floor space and a shower, and Venice supplies neither generously. Rooms in historic buildings are small, so the mat may take up most of the floor, with furniture pushed back against the walls. Ask when you book whether there is a shower in the room or down a corridor, because the gel has to come off before you dress. Most venues sit in Cannaregio, quieter and near Santa Lucia, with others in Dorsoduro near Campo Santa Margherita and secluded corners of Castello.
